RE: 8 week trip west to Yellowstone etc

When we were at YNP we stayed in West Yellowstone at Grizzley rv park. It was very nice and the people were friendly.
Driving back toward Los Angeles we stayed one night at the KOA in Cedar City, UT. It was very nice too.
Between Monterey and Santa Cruz there is a Calif. state beach campground called Sunset Beach. It does not have any hook-ups but it is one of our favorite spots.

RE: Where's He Ruide?

He Ruide,
Is there any place we can go to donate blood in your name? Are there any hospitals that are affiliated with MD Anderson? My DH and I donate blood locally and have done so for friends in the hospital and we would love to donate in your name.
How do people become stem cell donors?

RE: Mt. Rushmore campground ?

We drove by the Hill City KOA on our way to Mt. Rushmore. It looked nice, but I wondered why they put the horse stable near the pool. It looked like a lot of fun stuff/activities were packed into it.
We stayed at the Rafter J and loved every minute of our stay. I would go back again to the Rafter J. It was clean, beautiful and friendly.

RE: Where's He Ruide?

And yes I'm looking forward to hitting the camp grounds next Mother's day and before that I'll be spending next spring with a bunch of mods that I've had the time to think about.
Ruide
Ruide,
What is the list of mods you are pondering? If you give us a heads-up maybe we could get them started on are own PUPs :B
Take care. we are all thinking of you and your family, Sue

RE: 2007 Fleetwood Avalon problems

Rob,
We have the 2008 Avalon. I had to tell our dealer about the recall, but that was when it first came out and I'd read about it here. We are still waiting for the parts to come in, but thats ok we only use 12V when lifting or lowering now. We did have the lift break the pin, but our dealers mechanic came to our home and fixed it.
We had the Carrier AC installed and it cools the unit from bunk end to bunk end in a short time.
The only problems we have are:
The water pump is loud (Fleetwood usese ridged tubing instead of flex. as recommended by the pump manufacturer)
There seems to be a bit of a soft spot in the floor near the middle/back of the PUP - we were told that this is normal in the Avalon.
The door part that slides up and down to close the window broke off the track - dealer is replacing it.
The curtain panel near the door/sink is wearing out - dealer is trying to get Fleetwood to replace it,
We use our trailer a lot. We just got back from a month long trip and put 6,000 miles on it. During the rest of the year we camp 2 -4 nights once or twice a month. We have 3 kids and a big dog so we do put some wear and tear on it. I really don't have any big complaints about the unit. It is big and comfortable.

RE: Loading up for trip

When we had our 1997 Jayco 1207 I could crawl in and preload it for a trip.
Now we have a 2008 Fleetwood Avalon (highwall). There is no way you can get to the frig. it is toward the back and the dinette slides in making the aisle only about 10 inches wide. I just pop it up a couple of days before to start the frig. then pack it before we leave.
I think they should make a PUP frig, that has two doors. One facing the center aisle of the PUP and one that opens to the door aisle. the frig should be placed at the corner near the door. That way we could use it from either side.

RE: The Well Appointed Pup

When we bought our new Avalon last year I thought having a built in microwave was a dumb idea. Wrong! I use it all the time (reheating, defrosting, popcorn, cooking frozen meals like Mac and cheese, etc) If we have hook-ups great if not I just turn on the generator (Honda EU 3000). It saves on time and dishes. Now our first night out dinner is always some type of one dish heat and serve casserole or a premade Costco pot roast with gravy.

RE: How beneficial is a slide out dinette?

My vote is for the slide-out. We have 3 kids and a 106 lb dog (he takes up a lot of floor space). We just returned from a long PUP trip, 33 days, believe me the slide-out helps. On most of the trip we had 3 extra kids sleeping inside plus 4 extra adults eating in if it rained (12 people total) everyone fit comfortably.

RE: Bought a coffee maker, but...........

We use nothing but a stove-top percolator and have great coffee. The only thing you have to do is grind your beans to 'perc size' instead of drip. With drip grind you get a lot of extra chewy in your coffee because it is too finely ground.
so the $7.00 old fashioned coffee pot at WalMart will work just fine if you use the right coffee, perc size?
bumpy
We just returned from a month long PUP trip. We spent some of the time with hook-ups and some without. We took 6 lbs of good coffee ground for drip and 3 lbs of the same coffee ground courser for the percolator.
When we don't have electrical hook-ups our first pot is from the percolator (we set it up the night before, lean out of bed in the morning and light the stove and wait for it to perk) for the second and/or third pot we turn on the generator and make drip. The drip coffee is quicker and we use a metal insulated coffee pot so it stays warm. If we have electricity we just make drip. The percolator coffee is just as good if you do it right, but it does take longer. I must say that nothing smells better then the first pot of coffee brewing (either way).
My husband and I love our coffee and we usually only make one 12 cup pot. On this trip we had 4 other adults tent camping with us, so we really went through a lot of coffee. :B

RE: What are your best tips and tricks while camping?

The old timers to this forum already know that my best tip is never leave home without the wine bottle opener :S
That single item is more important than the glasses, cutting board, knife, cheese, fruits etc.
Ruide
Ruide,
Good job! Am I an old timer now? :B

RE: carrying shower stuff

When we use campground showers, we use white Sterlite "tubs" with holes in the sides, about 14 x 10 inches. They sit on the bench found in most showers. They also stack compactly for storage. We wear plastic sandals or Crocs to the shower and keep them on while showering, so we don't have to stand on the shower floor with bare feet.
These tubs can be used for lots of other things when camping.
We use the same type but smaller, about the size of a shoe box. Everything we need for the shower goes into the box. Soap, shampoo, rinse, quarters, dry clothes and towel sit on top.
We use flip flops because they are easy to get into and out of while standing on one foot trying to get dressed.

RE: Went Eyeball'n Yesterday

We have had a 2008 Avalon for a year now. I'll list some of the pros and cons as I see them:
Pros:
Sofa is very comfortable (esp. if you use a footstool - we have one that doubles as storage), Good size on fresh, gray and black tanks, Great to have indoor shower, Love the U-shaped glide-out dinette, stereo is great, counter height, Microwave (thought it was a dumb idea until I used it - wow! it really does make camping easier), size (the extra 2 feet help a lot)
Cons:
The frig is in a bad place (can't load it unless you pull out the dinette, or have a very thin child who can squeeze in), price is high.

RE: How I wound up with a PUP

Besides saving the money I find the beds on my PUP more comfortable. We have 3 inches of memory foam on them and high thread count sheets. We get to sleep in luxury and we know they're clean too!

RE: Fleetwood pup bathroom door

We don't even take the door with us. We use the shower certain for privacy. The other walls are enough for us along with the curtain across the opening. The door is just one more heavy thing to have to set up.

RE: Outside shower

When people talk about an outside shower in this forum, they are usually talking about the ones that are built into the side of the PUP. The one you are talking about is an "Northwest Territory 3.5 x 7 ft. Double Shower and Changing Room" I made you a clickable link to help you get a better answer. :)
